The Next 5 Prospects off the Spurs Conveyor Belt

Tottenham have been notorious in the past few years of bringing through a plethora of young English talent. The opportunities provided have been even greater enhanced by Mauricio Pochettino’s desire to provide a platform for young, hungry players to seize their chance. He prefers talent to train with the first team and use the excellent facilities, rather than go out on loan, as seen with Harry Winks, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Josh Onomah and Kyle Walker-Peters. Thus giving these players the experience of training with the first team and subconsciously knowing that if they work hard enough an opportunity can present itself. The success of this is evident, the performances of Harry Kane and undoubted talent of Harry Winks, not too mention the full-backs Rose and Walker who have both been developed from a young age through this great academy. In addition, the likes of Mason, Townsend, Caulker and Livermore who have all became England internationals in recent years and Nabil Bentelab who is set for Schalke for £16million and Alex Pritchard who we sold for £8million. The confirmed transfer of Bentelab results in a total of £75million received since 2011 for academy products alone. This substantial total of fees received for these home-grown players further exentuate the recent success.

Now on with the next 5 players…

  1. Kyle-Walker Peters

    kwp

  • Born: 13 April 1997 (age: 19)
  • Height:5ft 7
  • Nationality: English
  • Position: Right Back

Kyle Walker-Peters is a marauding full back who possesses blistering pace, but with plenty of guile and ability too, having began his career as a forward. He can play further forward on the right side of midfield but can also cover the left back slot adeptly. Coincidently named the same (minus the Peters) as our current first team right back Kyle Walker and both are right backs, unfortunately however they are not related.

Walker-Peters has been given a chance to play with the first team in friendlies and has been named on the substitutes bench on two occasions this season. He has recently signed a new contact at the club, extending till 2019. Overall based on his best performances and his physical ability, there’s no reason he can’t become a first choice fullback for a very good Premier League team three-to-four years from now.

Verdict: Expect more minutes next season

2.Shayon Harrison

harrison

  • Born: 13 Jul 1997 (age 19)
  • Height:6ft
  • Nationality: English
  • Position: Striker

Shayon Harrison is a young striker with pace and penalty-box agility as well as having impressive finishing instincts in front of goal. A regular goal scorer at u21 level and having scored in a 6-1 friendly win over Inter Milan, he was given a first team debut in the EFL cup defeat against Liverpool where he almost got on the score sheet. He was given the opportunity to train with England in November 2015, alongside Harry Winks ahead of the emotional friendly against France.

Shayon recently moved out on loan to Yeovil Town in January 2017 and has made 4 appearances so far this season. He is contracted until 2018 and has talent but to break into this Tottenham team as a striker may be difficult with Harry Kane ahead of him.

Verdict: Expect to travel with pre-season tour but depending on transfer activity may not get too many minutes during the season or a loan spell.

3. Jack Roles

jack-roles

  • Born: 26 February 1999 (age:17)
  • Height: 5ft 10
  • Nationality: English
  • Position: Centre midfield

Jack Roles is an old-fashioned box-to-box midfield player, from first whistle to last he gives his all, throwing himself into tackles and blocks but also has an impressive eye for goal. He is a regular goal scorer from midfield at all age groups so far, including six goals in his first five under-18 matches this season from midfield. I think that Pochettino definitely has his eye focussed towards this youngster coming through.

Verdict: Still very young, expect opportunities within the next two seasons and opportunities possibly pre-season. A big talent.

4. Luke McGee

mcgee

  • Born:2 September 1995 (age 21)
  • Height: 6ft 4
  • Nationality: English
  • Position: Goalkeeper

Luke McGee is an impressive shot-stopper who has built further recognition this season through making two penalty saves in one week for Peterborough in League one. The 21-year-old originally joined Peterborough on a six-month deal but the agreement was recently extended to cover the entire 2016/17 season.

Although McGee is yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs, despite being named on the bench in two Premier League fixtures, he has a lot of potential and in 2015 signed a contract lasting till 2019. McGee has gained valuable experience by competing in the third tier of English football this season.

Verdict: Highly talented goalkeeper who is thought highly of at Spurs, but with Lloris, Vorm and the anticipated permanent deal of Pau Lopez ahead of him, seems unlikely he will break in. English Premier League goalkeeper of the future

5. Marcus Edwards

edwards

  • Born: 3 December 1998 (age 18)
  • Height:5ft 7
  • Nationality: English
  • Position: Right wing/attacking midfield

The most talented player on the list and arguably one of the most talented youngsters in the country. Made his competitive debut off the bench in a 5-0 victory against Gillingham in the EFL cup, making an eye catching run and shot in the latter stages of that game that got the crowd off their seat.

Marcus has been a regular at all England youth age groups so far and I fully expect him to make it all the way to being a full international. Mauricio Pochettino was recently quoted comparing him to a young Lionel Messi, however he did ask for patience from the fans about this young superstar in the making. A few injuries have set him back a little bit so far this season but now he is back training with the first team squad and will hope to get first team minutes at some point.

Verdict: Superstar of the future. Expect to be in first team within the next two years.

Other notable mentions:

  • Keziah Sterling (Winger)
  • Thomas Glover (Goalkeeper)
  • Luke Amos (Centre midfield)
  • Samuel Shashsoua (Winger)
  • Christian Maghoma (Centre back)
